Study: Leisure gap growing

Posted by: Admin

May 18th, 2012 >> Leisure

You know about the economic gap between the haves and have-nots. Now apparently there is a growing leisure gap, according to researchers.

A study by the nonpartisan National Bureau of Economic Research found that highly educated, well-off Americans have less time on their hands to gallivant than others with less education.

The study, reported by CNN Money, says that since 1985, weekly leisure time for highly educated men, who have more than 12 years of education and generally have higher incomes, declined 1.2 hours to 33.2 hours by 2007. The leisure hours of men with little education climbed to 39.1 hours, up 2.5 hours during the same period. The same pattern was observed for highly educated women and women with little education.

The leisure time includes time to watch TV, go to the movies or socialize. The pattern also holds when the downturn in the economy and rise in unemployment is taken into consideration, according to CNN.

More than half of the increase in leisure inequality can be attributed to higher unemployment rates of adults with less education and skills, said Erik Hurst, a University of Chicago professor who co-authored the report. But even those who are unemployed and highly educated still have less leisure time than their lower-skilled unemployed counterparts, Hurst said. Thats because the former spend more time on chores.

Hurst said unemployed higher-skilled men don’t just lounge around and watch TV but “do more stuff around the house,” including cooking and child care. NBER tries to promote greater understanding of how the economy works.

Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter Has a Happy Ending

Leisure Suit Larry is coming again!

Based on the tiny slice of anecdote represented by forum feedback, it seems like a lot of folks werent all that terribly interested in a return of Leisure Suit Larry, even if it was accompanied by the inestimable Al Lowe, the man who thought the whole thing up in the first place. A few people were actually flat-out against the idea; one of our users summed a surprisingly popular view by calling the game a sleazy piece of nonsense that was tacky, sexist and nasty even when it was new.

Well tough noogies to all of you, because its happening! More than 14,000 people ponied up a grand total of $655,182, well over the goal of $500,000. With Paypal funding added to the mix, the final, bottom-line total becomes $674,232.

Thats a lot of money for a second remake of a 25-year-old game, but in his thank you video, Sierra veteran Josh Mandel expressed hope that the success of this Kickstarter will signal a wider resurgence of Sierra IPs and the adventure genre in general. With the Leisure Suit Larry Kickstarter completed, Mandel encouraged donators to throw their support behind Jane Jensens Pinkerton Road Kickstarter and, when it happens, the Two Guys From Andromeda, who are getting back together for another Space Quest game.

Carnegie Leisure Centre pools closed in Easter holidays

April 11th, 2012 >> Leisure

West Fifers waited three long years for Carnegie Leisure Centre to re-open – then three months later the pools are now closed.

Both the main and children#039;s swimming pools will be closed to the public from Sunday 1st April until Sunday 8th April for #034;snagging work#034;.

To minimise disruption, the training pool will be available for public swimming and club training whilst the work is being carried out.

The timing could not be worse for West Fifers as thousands of school children break-off for their Easter Holidays today (Friday).

A Fife Council spokesperson claimed that the first week of the Easter holidays was a good time to carry the work out.

She said, #034;It means there is no disruption to the popular core blocks of swimming lessons and the Trust can still offer swimming clubs and customers wishing to have a casual swim the opportunity to use the 25 metre training pool in the facility.#034;

The £17.5 million refurbished facility re-opened in November last year but many facilities, including a programme for fitness classes and access to the swimming pool, were not available until January.

Head of Leisure and Cultural Services Grant Ward said, #034;Due to essential snagging work being carried out within Carnegie Leisure Centre, it will be necessary to close both the main and children#039;s swimming pools to public use from Sunday 1st April to Sunday 8th April.

#034;To minimise disruption, the training pool will be available for public swimming and club training whilst the work is being carried out.#034;

Priceline.com Leads Travel Group Up 48% in Q1

Posted by: Admin

April 6th, 2012 >> Leisure

Three industry groups closed Friday with gains of more than 40% for the first quarter. Eight others advanced more than 30%. Those included some leading and some lagging industries and reveal several interesting potential leaders.

Which group posted the biggest gain?

Educational and media software makers. The 12-stock group grabbed a 63% gain for the quarter, but ranked No. 97 Friday. New issue Synacor (SYNC) holds the groups top Composite Rating, an 83, but its still below $10 a share.

Mortgage amp; related services popped 48%. The 13-stock group gained as interest rates remained low and optimism rose with regard to housing markets. Lender Processing Services (LPS) and HFF (HF) led the advance. The group ranks No. 34, but its cupboard is bare in terms of potential leaders.

Next in line are two leisure-sector groups: products and travel booking.

The travel booking group gained 48%, headed by Priceline.coms (PCLN) 54% year-to-date gain. The group ranks No. 19 and is also home to familiar names like Travelzoo (TZOO) and Expedia (EXPE). But only Priceline.com holds leadership grade credentials.

The leisure products group, led by Polaris (PII) and Sturm Ruger (RGR), gained 36% in Q1. That put it at a No. 2 ranking Friday. Ruger is extended after a bounce off its 10-week line. Polaris is in buying range above a flat base buy point of 70.41.

Specialty enterprise software makers scored a 35% gain for the quarter. VMware (VMW), the group leader, is up 35% for the year, and is 10% above a cup-with-handle buy point of 102.09. Citrix Systems (CTXS) is just past a 78.10 buy point after clearing a base-within-a-base. New issue Tangoe (TNGO) is just below a 20 buy point in a flat base.

The No. 1-ranked group, Internet Solutions, jumped 31% for the quarter. This group is chock-full of leaders, from F5 Networks (FFIV) and Rackspace Hosting (RAX) to SolarWinds (SWI) and Equinix (EQIX). F5 is still in buying range above a 130.37 buy point. SolarWinds reversed this week to test 10-week support, beneath a square box buy point of 39.85.
